Public Issues Forum: Climate Change- Origins, Impact, and Solutions

Nov 16, 2022

Presented by: David H. Petering, Distinguished Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry, Emeritus, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee

Climate change presents an existential threat to the future of life on Earth. This presentation will discuss the origins of climate change within the context of Earth as a life-sustaining planet, followed by an overview of what is happening across the globe as a result of rising global temperatures. The focus will then shift to what can be done in terms of technical solutions that quickly transform the world’s economies to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. Milwaukee’s Climate and Equity Plan will be highlighted to illustrate the promise and the challenges of this far-reaching objective. Next, the question will be considered whether technological fixes can be implemented in time and at the scale necessary in the USA without a drastic change in our collective values. The talk concludes with some thoughts about the role of the League of Women Voters in addressing the climate crisis.

Public Issues Forum: Fact or Fiction:

Nov 19, 2023

The LWV has a reputation for careful, dispassionate analyses of public policy issues and civil discourse on often contentious topics. The LWVMC's Reproductive Rights Committee is presenting a public forum on the facts and myths about abortion care. This forum is intended to address current WI laws concerning access to abortion care, and to hear from medical experts about many facets of reproductive health care.

Public Issues Forum: Dire Consequences: Impact of Abortion Restrictions:

In recent years, laws restricting access to reproductive healthcare and abortion have imperiled women's lives, health and fertility. Maternal deaths have increased, especially for Black women. Imbalance of Power: How Shifts in State Government Undermine Wisconsin's Conservation Legacy

Jan 10, 2023
Hosted by LWV of LaCrosse County, LWV of Milwaukee County, and 16 other leagues in WI.

Wisconsin has gone from being a conservation leader to a state that has failed to establish a basic standard for the contaminant PFAS in groundwater. How? This program, titled “Imbalance of Power,” highlights the shift in power that has occurred over the past 10 years between the state’s three branches of government – legislative, executive and judicial – established in the constitution as co-equal branches. The impacts of specific laws and court rulings, as well as the inability of the legislature to act on executive appointees, will be discussed. The program is based on a recent publication by Wisconsin Green Fire, a nonpartisan organization whose mission is to advance science-informed analysis and policy solutions to address Wisconsin’s greatest conservation challenges.
