HomeBecome an Observer or Poll Worker

Election Observation Program (through LWV-Wisconsin):

(From the League of Women Voters of Wisconsin's website, www.lwv.org/wisconsin)
Become an Election Observer with the Wisconsin State League. You'll need to be available to volunteer for a minimum of 2 hours on Election Day. Election observers will also need a cell phone to use while volunteering and have their own transportation to and from their assigned polling location. There are also opportunities to be a "roving" observer and observe at multiple polling sites. Rovers need to be available to volunteer for at least 4 hours on Election Day.

Training is conducted via online webinar. You can sign up for the program and training here. If you have any questions, reach out to the LWVWI Voter Education Manager, Eileen Newcomer, at enewcomer@lwvwi.org or (608) 256-0827.

More information about the Election Observer program can be found on the WI State League's website by clicking here.

Election Protection Opportunities:

(From the Election Protection website, 866OurVote.org/Volunteer)
Election Protection - led by the Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law - is the nation's largest non-partisan voter protection coalition. Through the 866-OUR-VOTE hotline and voter assistance field program, Election Protection helps ensure eligible voters are able to participate in our democracy while collecting data for meaningful reform so that our elections are free, fair and accessible.

There are two types of volunteer opportunities available with Election Protection:
OPPORTUNITIES FOR LEGAL PROFESSIONALS:
If you're a lawyer, paralegal, law student or other legal professional, sign up to volunteer with Election Protection here
OPPORTUNITIES TO MONITOR THE POLLS:
If you aren't a legal professional, sign up to volunteer with Election Protection in the nonpartisan poll monitoring program here

Become a Poll Worker/Election Inspector
(From the City of Milwaukee's website)

Election Inspectors play a vital role at voting sites. They work directly with voters and assist them in any of the following capacities:

  • Check-in registered voters and provide the voters with a ballot and voter number.
  • Register qualified individuals to vote who are new voters or have an address or name change.
  • Handle the voting machine to verify ballots are accepted and give out "I Voted" stickers.

Election Inspectors are paid $230 (see City of Milwaukee's website for hazard pay increase information) for a full-day shift and are required to attend one paid training class ($21.75) or retraining ($15.00). To receive training class payment, you are required to work on Election Day. Lunch and dinner breaks are allowed for full-day shift workers. A full-day shift is 6:00 a.m. to close of the voting site.

Chief Inspectors manage the voting site and are paid $325 (hazard pay increase during the pandemic) and must work a full-day shift. An additional $25 is included for attending the mandatory training class. To receive training class payment, Chiefs are required to work on Election Day for the full-day shift, which is 6am to close of the voting site. Lunch and dinner breaks are allowed.
