Mass Incarceration is a new advocacy program for 2025.

Thanks to Dr. Emily Sterk who recently joined the LWV, we are in the process of developing a committee of interested members who consider this an important community issue.

Dr. Emily Sterk joined the Milwaukee Turners as the American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS) Leading Edge Fellow and Research and Advocacy Associate in September 2024. She is an educator and lifelong learner who has worked in various learning environments, including national and international universities, correctional facilities, youth detention centers, and adult education centers. As part of the “Confronting Mass Incarceration” team, Emily develops and contributes to the Milwaukee Turners’ expanding expertise in mass incarceration policy and creates research-informed programs for system-impacted individuals. Emily joined the League of Women Voters in the fall of 2024 and will be helping with the League's jail-based voting efforts this year.

We would love to have you join our first dialogue on this topic to see where it takes us!

Also, the Milwaukee Neighborhood News Service wrote about our current efforts here: How the League of Women Voters helps people with criminal records (9/11/24 Devin Blake).
