Event year heat records are being broken and glaciers are rising. Wisconsin is experiencing the worst air quality in the nation as a result of Canadian wildfires which are directly linked to climate change and global warming. We are in a climate health emergency and it affects all of us. High heat and air pollution are directly linked to higher rates of asthma, lung and heart problems, and dementia. The impact is even greater on pregnant women and their unborn child and on the elderly. Adverse impacts of warming climate are not felt equitably among people. Disadvantaged communities are more impacted by high temperatures and live in areas located in areas more at risk from air pollution.
The League of Women Voters US believes that climate change is an existential threat facing our nation and our planet and has adopted strong policy positions that call for the reduction of CO2 in the atmosphere with a goal of zero emissions of greenhouse gases by the year 2050.
On Earth Day 2024 the LWVMC announced the establishment of a new advocacy group to educate and activate members and the public regarding the climate change crisis. The LWVMC Climate Action Group is born.
