Understanding Media Literacy: How to Stay Informed, Engaged and in the Know
June 18, 2025
11:00 AM-12:30 PMET
The landscape of the media matters now more than ever, propaganda, mis-information, dis-information, and mal-information have been elevated to the highest echelons of government in our nation. Deep fakes, false equivalencies, half-truths and conspiracy theories cloud online content from social media to fringe internet news outlets.
It is critical that folks understand how to discern the news and how to empower their loved ones, neighbors, colleagues, and communities to do the same. An ever growing number of folks get their news from online outlets and traditional media is shifting from print journalism, to radio news, and news from word of mouth from trusted sources in the community. It’s imperative that voters are empowered and educated to glean the facts from news, discern and ask questions, and stay curious to ask questions and seek answers and accountability from those in power.
Through a conversation between Eric Schurenberg, Founder and CEO of the Alliance for Trust in Media and distinguished instructor in Journalism at the University of Chicago and Chelsey R. Cartwright, the League’s Manager of the Democracy Truth Project, we will take a deeper look at how to discern media, why independent and local media matters, and explore tools and tactics to read across sources and build strategies to strengthen your League’s connection to local news outlets.
