Forty years ago, the League adopted a position in support of the establishment of an independent commission or the designation of such an agency to be responsible for the development of a legislative and Congressional redistricting plan. The League also supports citizen participation and access throughout the redistricting process. The League urges the Court to deny the Petition for the Proposed Rule to Amend Wis. Stat. Sec. 809.70.

The wheels of democracy ran smoothly on November 3rd, with results from Milwaukee's Central Count reported earlier than expected despite a huge increase in absentee ballots. While we await results of the orderly process of tallying and confirming votes, this is a good time to celebrate the high Wisconsin voter turnout, which looks to be close to three-quarters of the voting age population, a turnout boosted by the efforts of many community and civic organizations, businesses, and individuals.

The League of Women Voters of Milwaukee County joins civic coalitions in pressing Mayor Barrett and the Common Council to reduce the Milwaukee Police Department budget and the scope of MPD's responsibilities while reallocating resources to provide urgently needed social services to the City.
